The purpose of this study was to investigate effective school-based supports for students who are chronically absent from school. This study explored the perspective of senior high school students who have a history of chronic absenteeism. In this action research case study, a number of collection methods were employed, including student interviews, review of student academic files, and classroom observations. The primary source of data consisted of exploratory personal interviews. The themes that emerged were Declining Upper Classman Attendance, Medical Reason Impacting Attendance, Peer Influence Impacting Attendance, Personal Reasons Impacting Attendance, Staff Support, Job and Community-Based Support, and Family and Friend Support. The results of this study indicated that participants felt strongly that having more effective and personal relationships with the teachers and staff at the school could make a significant impact on their school attendance. The conclusions drawn from this research can be used to provide school districts and educators with a strong guidebook for responding to chronic absenteeism.
