Two instances of anaphora in Spanish not consistent with Chomsky's (1981a) formulation of the Binding Principles are examined: (1) the non-complementarity of anaphors and pronominals within Prepositional Phrases, and (2) the obligatory subject-subject disjoint reference requirement (DRR) in some structures with subjunctive complements. These two cases are explored both in terms of a linguistic analysis and child language acquisition data. The linguistic analysis argues that a strictly structural solution may be found for Case (1), but that proposed strictly structural accounts, which assume subjunctive complements to be tenseless and which incorporate the element TENSE into the definition of binding domains for pronominals, are untenable for Case (2). It is argued that lexical/semantic properties of ('+)volitional verbs interact with the structural principles in determining the DRR. The results of the experiments on acquisition with eighty 3-9 year-old children--using an act-out task--showed that in early child language children define binding domains in terms of constituent structure for both (1) and (2). In simple sentences, S and PP are initially defined as minimal binding domains for both anaphors and pronominals. Proforms are initially differentiated in direct object position of S. Within PPs, where there is no c-commanding antecedent, proforms are initially assimilated and treated as pronouns (free to corefer). This initial hypothesis is modified developmentally for anaphors within PPs. The results for complex sentences show that, regardless of complement type (indicative, subjunctive), children initially define the complement S as the binding domain for its subject, and allow the subject to (co)refer freely. In agreement with the linguistic analysis, the DRR develops through the interaction of lexical/semantic properties of main verbs with the structural principles, and not as a function of TENSE.
