Academic redshirting is a practice in which children who are showing signs of behavioral and academic immaturity are delayed a year. Some early childhood educators, policymakers, and parents believe that having children academically redshirted will help them become successful in their academics and help with their social skills. Although there has been some evidence of academic redshirting helping children do better academically, researchers have found that children who have been academically redshirted only do well academically temporarily, and they may develop behavioral problems. Behavioral problems may affect children as they become older, and more research can be done in understanding how academic redshirting affects children's social skills. It is important for the school community, parents, and policymakers to find alternative ways to help children strengthen their academic skills with working on social-emotional skills as well. Academic redshirting has been noted by many researchers as negatively affecting children's social skills. The practice may lead to children having more problems in academics and behavior as they become older. There is a concern that academic redshirting could hinder children in becoming healthy socially and emotionally. It is recommended that teachers and parents consider that not all children can benefit from being academically redshirted, but understand how the practice affects children's social development; additional research should be done.
