This study was an attempt to simultaneously understand the abuse and treatment process from the "offenders" perspective and qualitatively assess the effectiveness of an evolving model of treating court-mandated domestic violence "perpetrators" combining psycho-educational and solution-focused perspectives. The model is consistent with systemic and constructivist epistemologies, has as its main goal the co-creation of lasting change, and is sensitive to issues of safety, personal responsibility, and interactive dynamics.

520 $a Thirteen subjects from four groups that completed the eighteen-week process were interviewed. They were asked open-ended questions during ethnographic interviews to provide the researcher with information regarding the usefulness of techniques and intervention. Questions also allowed the subjects to describe their process of change. The data was then analyzed using the constant comparative method (Glaser & Strauss, 1967; Strauss, 1987). Categories and themes were constantly emerging and being developed and interrelated during the data collection and data analysis phases of the research.
520 $a Subjects attributed their violence to their partner's behavior, to relationship issues, to outside influences, and to their upbringings. Other subjects accepted responsibility for their abusive behavior and attributed it to a lack of self-control or to having a temper. All subjects described positive changes that they had made since their initial arrest. These changes were attributed to the group process, both the psycho-educational and solution-focused aspects of it. They were also attributed to being afraid of further legal involvement and to wives and children in that they provided reason for changing.
520 $a Recidivism rates of all group participants that completed at least sixteen of eighteen sessions were gathered and reported. Those recidivism rates were compared with the recidivism rates of all of the non-completers. Two of the twenty-nine completers had been re-arrested for a domestic violence offence since completing the program, resulting in a 6.89% recidivism rate for the four groups studied. Twice as many non-completers had been re-arrested on domestic violence charges since dropping out of the program. Four of the twenty-six non-completers, or 15.38%, had been re-arrested for a domestic violence offence.
