This thesis discusses a series of varied approaches to designing musical software with elements of play for the purposes of both personal play and musical performance, as well as touches upon the history of musical play. Supplementary materials include video documentation of musical performances with the software discussed, as well as Game Boy ROM files for a number of Game Boy instruments developed by the author that can be run on a Game Boy emulator.
